The city is renowned for its abundance of flavorful, fresh seafood. Due to the significant Chinese immigration from Hong Kong in the past, Sandakan was also known as Sabah's very own "Little Hong-Kong." The Lower Kinabatangan, famous for its animal river safari, is also accessible from here. The Danum Valley Conservation Area is located about 80 kilometres from Lahad Datu city and is classified as a Class 1 (Protection) Forest Reserve under the Sabah Forestry Enactment 1968. The enchanted forest is home to an incredible variety of plants and wildlife species, including banteng, clouded leopard, orang utan, slow loris, proboscis monkey, and the endangered Bornean pygmy elephant. Danum Valley, Sabah is also home to the world's tallest tropical tree, a Yellow Meranti tree species (Shorea faguetiana). With a recorded height of 100.8m or 330.7ft, this massive tree known as 'Menara' (Malay for Tower) is only 21.2m lower than Kota Kinabalu's iconic Tun Mustapha Tower.
